SPONSORED PROJECTS

Our commitment in favour of the community of Pabi derives from the direct observation of the enormous difficulties that people here are facing everyday, when it comes to exercise basic human rights that, unfortunately, are still far from being universally guaranteed to the majority of the world population.

bambini al villaggio * gruppo bambini

The inadequacies of the health care and instruction system and of the country's infrastructure motivated our first fundraisings to help the local school, some disable children and the Brekumanso rural clinic, as well as to promote the malaria prevention project in the village. One way or the other direct beneficiaries of these projects have always been the children that, as the most vulnerable in the society, suffer mostly the lack of basic rights. The micro-credit project has women and disadvantaged people as direct beneficiaries, actively involved in income-producing activities in order to improve their social-economic situation and therefore guarantee a better future to the next generation.

You can contribute to our projects with a bank transfer.

NEWS - MICROCREDIT 2006!!!

The microcredit project, started in 2005 and now benefiting 22 women in the village of Pabi has in 2006 been enlarged thanks to the cooperation of ANANSE VILLAGE with two other associations: PROVIDENCE is a self-help group of HIV positive people meeting at the HEALTH FOR ALL HERBAL CLINIC at Oryem, a village 1 km from Pabi, while the West Akym district's branch of the GHANA ASSOCIATION FOR THE BLIND is located in Asamankese, the district capital, 13 kms from our village. Thanks to a generous donation we are now supporting 15 disadvantaged people with small loans. We heartly hope to be able to continue and enlarge this cooperation.

At Pabi in the meanwhile other 12 women have joined the group of the 10 pioneering micro-enterpreneuses, bringing to 22 the members of the BIAKUYE(in Twi "unity, togetherness")SISTERS ASSOCIATION. In the meantime the first 10 beneficiaries of the loans (May 2005) have finished paying back and are now obtaining new, incremented amounts.

This project started in May 2005 and benefits women and girls from the village of Pabi. Thanks to a small loan (50 to 70 euros each) the women are able to start a business, or improve an already existing one. We have been inspired by the book of Professor Mohammad Yunus "Banker to the Poor" . The beneficiaries have been selected on the basis of being single and having a low income: some of them are processing local products (palm oil, cocoa soap, kenke), others are retailing.

Loans are individual, but women are grouped in teams of five that meet weekly to keep the books and discuss any problem incurred. The groups stand liable for the payment of the weekly rates (around 1 euro) by each of their members.

With a minimum amount of 70 € you can help a woman to start up or enlarge her business.

THE BREKUMANSO HEALTH CENTRE

controllo del peso

The Brekumanso Health centre, opened in May 2004, is a small rural clinic about five kms far from Pabi. It has been financed by the HIPC program (Highly Indebted Poor Countries, promoted by the World Bank to reduce the debt of some "selected" developing countries) and was inaugurated despite the lack of basic equipment and furniture. To manage it: a professional nurse, Mrs Winnifred, helped by a traditional birth attendant and a nutritionalist: thanks to the commitment of these three women the centre "came to life".

We supported the Brekumanso Health Centre with a first fundraising at the beginning of 2005, whereby it was possible to buy a water tank, a mobile phone, benches for the waiting room, mattresses, bed sheets and other basic facilities. They helped us with the malaria prevention project in Pabi: they held informational meetings to educate the people about the disease and provided the insecticide kits for the nets' treatment. Ananse Village provided 170 mosquito nets, to all children under the age of 5 and the pregnant women of Pabi.

At the centre we have created an emergency fund, in order to help severe cases (mostly children) who need extensive treatment or surgery in bigger hospitals and could not afford the costs by themselves. Thirty euros can save a life!

CHILDREN & EDUCATION

In summer 2004, thanks to a generous donation, we financed the rehabilitation of Pabi's Junior Secondary School (three classrooms + the headmaster's room), including the masonry and new doors and windows. Unfortunately the money was not enough to substitute the leaking aluminium sheets of the roof. We hope to raise the necessary amount (about 600 €) before the coming of the next rain season.

studenti che falciano il campo da calcio * lavori conclusi

Apart from the infrastructure problems, the shortcomings of the local school (few badly paid and not too prepared teachers, lack of basic educational instruments) preclude children with even mild physical or mental handicaps from attending the school.

In addition to the "normal" movement and accessibility challenges, disabled children have to face social traditional beliefs and prejudices that impute disability to a sort of punishment or curse for something that the family has done. It is not easy to find (and pay) institutions able to assist these children, who often live their life in an isolated "world apart".

At the moment Ananse Village is sponsoring a deaf girl that has started attending a special school in September 2005, as well as a child born with clubfeet, who underwent an orthopaedic surgery in 2002 and is now regularly attending check-ups at the Nsawam Orthopaedic Training Centre.

There are though other "difficult" situations in the village that could be addressed with other donations. We look for the adequate assistance facilities, offer counselling to parents and, if they agree, we accompany them and help them with registration and administrative formalities. We bear all costs of treatment, surgery and/or boarding, as well as the transport for the child and the family to and from the facility.
